What is it?
Mt Fuji, Japan’s most famous mountain and iconic landmark. This artwork is based on the ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Mt Fuji (Thirty-Six views of Mt Fuji) by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). Hokusai is one of Japan’s most famous artists, and the series was produced from 1830 to 1832, when Hokusai was in his seventies and at the height of his career.
Mt Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776m. It is a dormant volcano that last erupted in 1707–1708. Mount Fuji is about 100 kilometers south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. It is snow-capped for about 5 months a year.
 
Fun Facts

• Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" and was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site in 2013. 
• The Japanese people believe that Mt Fuji is a place of immortality. This can be traced back to The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, where a goddess deposits the elixir of life on the peak. This belief was at the heart of Hokusai's own obsession with the mountain.
