By the end of the war the Brighton branch had raised more than £40,000, a rather formidable total when a quality house could be bought in the suburb for £1000 or less. Secretary Violet Campbell warned against complacency: ``Do not let the approaching news of peace have the effect of lessening our work for the men who have brought it about. It would be a poor way of showing our gratitude.’’    In November 1918 a £25,000 donation from the Baillieu brothers enabled the Repatriation Department to buy Kamesborough at 78 North Rd for use as a home for permanently incapacitated veterans. It was renamed Anzac Hostel and refitted with the help of the Brighton Red Cross.    The Red Cross became extremely busy again during World War II and in April 1940 opened an opportunity shop in Bay St in the United Friendly Societies Dispensary opposite North Brighton railway station.
