This lovely 1737-39 German band sampler contains characteristic patterns from the Saxon area.  The samplers from this time period are long and narrow and are usually divided into sections: patterns, alphabets and a personal area displaying people, animals, and plant motifs.  Our sampler maker did not sign her name to this exceptional, reversible work.   Her crowned initials could be TB, and her parents could be MMB and MIEB.   The motifs are soft gold coloring, with a bit of rose and iris blues shades.  Lady Justice is present, along with a giant squirrel, a lion, birds and flowers.  The lower figure I am dubbing “The Flower Queen” with the dress of many stripes.

The translated Bible verse is Ecclesiastes 12:1, “Remember thy Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil nights come and the years draw near when you will say, "I have no delight in them".  The caption for the supper scene translates to: “Here is Jesus food and drink”.
