Description
Archibald Gordon MacGregor R.E. MC CG (Belge), DSC edited by Anna Welti
Made vivid by inclusion of copies of original battle orders, photographs and letters this book contains personal views on life in conflict which are voiced in his diaries and letters home and clear sketch maps in colour show each stage of his deployment along with fascinating original copies of army orders.
He was awarded the Military Cross in 1918 for constantly patrolling his cable under intense artillery barrage and machine gun fire keeping up communication between brigade headquarters and the advanced report centre before successfully withdrawing his men before finding themselves isolated. For his war service His Majesty the King of the Belgians issued the Lieutenant the Croix de Guerre in 1919.
About the author
Dr Archibald Gordon MacGregor MC, Croix de Guerre (Belge), D.Sc, F.R.S.E, F.G.S was a geologist of international repute. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1894, the son of James Gordon MacGregor F.R.S. and great grandson of Rev James MacGregor who was one of the founding fathers of the church in Canada. The family moved from Canada to Edinburgh in 1901 where Archibald’s university education was interrupted (1915-1919) by war service where he became Signals Officer with the 27th (Lowland) Brigade of the 9th Division.
He went on to become president of the Edinburgh Geological Society, and was on the Council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He married his wife Kathleen in 1940 and they had two daughters. His daughter Anna has compiled and edited his work to form this book. He died aged 92 in 1986.
